Physiotherapy PDF Print E-mail

Physiotherapy may include both land and water sessions to provide you with the best opportunity to reach your goals.  We provide a complete assessment of your health to assist us in being pro-active with respect to potential injuries you may face due to your illness, injuries, sport or work activities.

Our Registered Physiotherapist provides a comprehensive assessment of your movement and injury, which ensures that your treatment is designed just for you.  Exercises and other modalities (Ultrasound, Muscle Stim, and IFC) may be included in your treatment.

Our therapists offer:

1) Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning.  This is done by inserting very fine needles into the skin to stimulate precise anatomic points in the body (called acupoints or acupuncture points) for therapeutic purposed.  Along with the usual method of puncturing skin with the fine needles, heat, pressure, friction or impulses of electromagnetic energy to stimulate the points may also be used to stimulate the points.  The acupoints are stimulated to balance the movement of energy (qi) in the body to restore health.

2) Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, state of the art soft tissue system/movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART.  These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

3) Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM): Each tissue in the body has individualized frequencies. The individualized and specific vibrational characteristic of each atom, of each tissue type, varies even more specifically for varying conditions, such as: trauma, inflammation, stress, environmental influences, etc. To put the theory of vibrations in a better overall perspective: different vibrations / frequencies of sound, light, radio waves, etc., are responsible for notes of music, colors of light, and radio stations. Vibrations are specific and unique for all matter, inorganic and organic.  When an injury occurs to a tissue, the electrons in the affected tissue take on a different vibrational characteristic, unique to that injury or other abnormal condition. As the vibrations of the electrons change, it is believed the electrons concurrently may also change to a different "orbit" from what was normal for that tissue type.

4) Exercise Therapy uses a variety of equipment (resistance bands, weights, towels, fitness balls, etc.) a program will be designed to specifically meet your goals and address any injuries.  Exercises for Strength, Flexibility, Balance and Agility will be included.

5) Aquatic Therapy using our state-of-the-art Hydrotrack Water Treadmill to increase your strength, flexibillity, range of motion and overall health.  Our "one-person pool" allows us to control all aspects of your therapy or exercise.  This is especially beneficial for people recovering from surgery or has a fear of water.

Our Physical Therapy treatments are beneficial for anyone with:
1) Pre-/Post-surgery
2) Surgery Prevention
3) Back Rehab
4) Cardiac Prehab & Rehab

5) Degenerative Conditions
6) Neurological Disorders
7) Balance Difficulties
8) Motor Vehicle Accidents and/or Workplace Injuries

An Aquatic Therapy (or Hydrotherapy) program using our state-of-the-art Hydrotrack™ Water Treadmill can increase your strength, flexibillity, range of motion and overall health.  Our "one-person pool" allows us to control all aspects of your therapy or exercise.  This is especially beneficial for people recovering from surgery or has a fear of water.  If you’re in pain when you move, you should be in the Hydrotrack™ for your therapy or training.  There is minimal impact or joint stress on the Hydrotrack, and as you get stronger, we can adjust the water depth to increase the impact.

Massage Therapy PDF Print E-mail

Massage Therapy is a general term covering a variety of disciplines for the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes - Swedish, Shiatsu, trigger point, neuromuscular - with roots in both Eastern and Western cultures.  Massage improves the function of the body's connective tissues and/or muscles.  Among conditions alleviated by massage are whiplash, low back and neck pain, and degenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis.  It involves the practice of kneading or otherwise manipulating muscles or other soft tissue with the intent of increasing circulation and detoxification, reducing physical and emotional stress and increasing general wellness.

Whether you seek to maintain your good health or treat specific symptoms, massage therapy can help.  Because each session is tailored accoring to your needs, it is an appropriate therapy for all ages and conditions.

CranialSacral Therapy combines gentle hands-on bodywork with meditative use of the inner eye and inner ear.  This method draws from traditions such as osteopathy, energy work and Taoism and relies on not only technical excellence, but on a high degree of instinct and intuition.  This therapy evaluates and enhances the Craniosacral System - the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding and protecting the brain and spinal cord.  Craniocacral Therapy is an effective preventative health measure and bolsters resistance to disease.

LOMI - Ancient Hawaiian Temple Bodywork, is a healing ritual based on the initiation rites developed and practiced in the temples of ancient Hawaii.  Steeped in ancient spiritual traditions preserved from generation to generation, Lomi is the ultimate holistic approach to healing, effecting change on all energy levels: Physical healing, Emotional Release, Mental clarity, Reconnection with spirit.  Lomi combines the use of prayer (pule), breath (ha) and energy (mana) with a variety of massage-like strokes in a rhythmic, almost dance-like movement.  Lomi embraces the principle that the body is a highly energized thought form.  Everything that happens to us in our lifestime is registered in our body's cells as vibrational energy - if you change thses energy patterns in the physical body, the emotional, psychological and spiritual patterns are easier to access and align.

Conductive Education PDF Print E-mail

What is Conductive Education?

Conductive Education® (CE) is an innovative learning system that merges the elements of education with rehabilitation.  First developed in Hungary over 60 years ago, CE deals not only with the physical needs, but also with the social and psychological issues facing people of all ages with neurological conditions.  It is a method of teaching and training the injured brain to communicate with the muscles and the body.

“Conductors”, or specially trained instructors/therapists, work with program participants to help them gain, or regain, physical mobility and self-sufficiency one small step at a time.  Unlike most medical or therapeutic models of treatment, Conductive Education® attempts to change the way people see their own abilities, and to raise their awareness of the way their body works.  Each small group session is a series of tasks that are designed to help improve basic skills which are required to form more complex movements.  Tasks are designed to focus on co-ordinating the physical, mental and emotional factors by making the body and the mind work together.  The repeated process of setting and attaining small goals helps develop independence and self-esteem, and encourages participants to keep working.  As active participants in their healing, clients actively work their muscles and not rely on equipment or elaborate machines any more than is absolutely necessary.  When muscles are not used actively they quickly begin to atrophy and weaken.  Our sessions are small group where clients are guided through the series of tasks and assistance is given as needed.

“For you to make improvement, you must put forth the effort, we can not do it for you.”

Following a stroke, many of the pathways or neural connections from the brain to the muscles, which we have developed over the years, have been destroyed or damaged and many will never return.  Our brain may no longer recognize our bodies position in space let alone how to take control of it.  The good news is that the brain has a great deal of plasticity and redundancy and it is possible to help restore some of the lost function by training other portions of the brain to take over.  Although it is not an easy process and will take a great deal of time and dedication, however, it is possible to make improvement!  Every brain injury is unique and the amount of progress that any one individual makes has to do with many factors such as the severity of the injury and the participation of the client.  In traditional therapy, most people are told "anything you haven't got back in the first 90 days you might never get back".  Significant gains are possible using CE.

Some of the areas in which Conductive Education® can help include:

  •        balance, breathing and co-ordination
  •        sitting up without help
  •        developing hand-eye co-ordination
  •        establishing security and self-confidence
  •        learning or improving self-expression
  •        dealing with crowded environments
  •        bowel and bladder control
  •        verbal and non-verbal communication
  •        developing self-sufficiency, reducing dependence on others

A new session of Conductive Education starts the week of January 4th, 2010 at the Functional Performance Health & Wellness Centre.  All new participants must complete the Adult Application Form or Child Application Form.  Returning participants must complete the Registration Form
